(From Our Own Correspondent). SHANNON, Jan. 25. At a recent meeting of the Buckley Drainage Board Mr R, J. Law was reelected chairman for the ensuing term. Regarding- tho suggested work by the Kairanga aroa in making a cut in the rivor at Hamilton’s Bend, the board resolved to protest to the Manawatu-Orqua River Board against any such work being undertaken as it would seriously affect the lands in this drainage hoard’s district. It was also decided to ask tile River Board not to carry out any work that may accelerate the flow in the river on the upper reaches until a “get-away” is provided at tho other end.

At the Borough Council meeting on Tuesday evening the borough ranger reported that lie had cleared the roads of 93 head of stock during the past month. As wandering stock were still a nuisance in the borough, it was resolved that the ranger he instructed to give greater attention to the matter. The council considered the local unemployment question, it being pointed out that Shannon’s allocation from the board was not on an equal footing with certain other centres. The town clerk was instructed to write to the Minister of Employment and to the member fur the district, and the Leader of the Opposition on the lines of the discussion, and forwarding a strong protest . against the treatment of the unemployed in Shannon. Cr. Thwaites reported that during the past week children had been, playing in the borough reserves anti had done considerable damage to the ornamental shrubs. It was decided to issue a warning to -the public against such practice, and also to ask tho headmaster to bring the matter before the notice of pupils on the re-opening of the school. Hailam lias returned from a visit to tlie Milford Sounds, where lie experienced wonderful weather and had a most enjoyable trip. Mrs T. Smiley, of the local Power Board sub station; accompanied by Mrs Smiley end family, has returned from a holiday spent at. Pnra-pai-ammi. Mr 11. K. Hook left on Tuesday evening for Auckland where he will join tlie boat for Sydney on route for. South Africa. There was a large number of friends on the station to bid him Godspeed. Mr P. Kennedy,’ of the Bank of New Zealand staff, has left on furlough. Mr and Mrs T. White and Miss White, of Carterton, aro the guests of Constable and Mrs Bluikie. -
