FREE STATE ELECTION
3.45 P.M. EDITION
EARLY RESULTS. (United Press Association—By Electric Telegraph—Copyright.) Received January 26, 1.40 p.m. LONDON., Jan. 25. The count in the Free State election has begun, but owing to the intricacies, due to proportional representation, the final figures will not be available until late on Friday or Saturday. The poll averages SO per cent, compared with 75 last year. The few first preferences will be decisive in - some contests others needing a dozen successive counts.
Impersonations were widespread, but the rowdyism was nothing unusual. The military were occasionally called to assist the police. The Army Comrades’ Association used tyre levers and spanners against their armed opponents. At Ballyduff a youth was shot in the leg. Soldiers threatened to use tear gas and quelled a disturbance in Monaghan. The unopposed candidates are Professors Thrift and Alton and Sir James Craig, Independents, Dublin University, and the speaker, Mr F. rally. The Fianna Fail members elected include Mr Maguire and Mrs Concannon, the woman novelist. Mr McGilbergan (a Cosgraveite) was elected for the National University. A severe blow was the defeat of the Cosgraveite. the ex-Speaker, Mr Hayes. The do Valeraites are expected at least to retain the Dublin seats. Mr Cosgrave polled well in Cork and Mr de Valera is leading for Clare.. Those elected, for Wicklow include Mr Moore, a de Valeraite and Mr L. Mahoney, a Cosgraveite, and for Wexford Mr Cornish, Labour.
An earlier message stated that Mr Cosgrave was elected.
