SCOTTISH GATHERING.

TO THE AIEAIORY OF BURNS,

Last evening the Manawatu Scottish Society held a social and dance in the Cosmopolitan Hall to celebrate the anniversary of the birth of Robert Burns, Scotland’s illustrious poet. There was a good number present, including the Pipe Band, and as the result of an invitation extended members of the Dannevirke Caledonian Society also attended. The initial part of the evening was devoted to a speech on Burns delivered bv Mr J. M. AlcLinden, of Palmerston North, and concert items, and the remainder to dancing. Mr J. S. Jenkinson, president of the society, who was in the chair, introduced the speaker, who gave a very interesting survey of the life of Robert Burns. At the conclusion Air Jenkinson moved and Mr W. Allen endorsed a hearty vote of thanks to Air AlcLinden. This was carried bv acclamation. Air Jenkinson stated that he had heard innumerable speeches on Burns, both in New Zealand and in Scotland, but he could honestly say that Air AlcLinden’s had been the best he had ever heard. Air Allen endorsed these remarks. The attention of those present was drawn to a Scottish Standard flag which hung on the wall. Air Jenkinson stated that during the war period the flag had been sold and resold to raise funds to provide comforts for soldiers in the trenches. By this means a considerable sum had been raised. The flag which had finally become the property of Air D. Alunro, of Palmerston North, had been donated to the Pipe Band. The following items were contributed- —Vocal solos, Aliss E. Thompson, “There was a Lad was Born in Kyle,” “My Heart is Sair”; Air Henderson, “Scots Wa Hae,” “The Learig,” “A man’s a Alan”; Air Buglass, The Star o’ Robbie Burns”; Airs Jensen, “Ye Banks and Braes,” “Robin Adair” (accompanied by Airs Barlow); Airs Findlay, “Joe Anderson Ala Joe” (accompanied by Airs Barlow).
