EDUCATION BOARD.

WORK AT SCHOOLS,

The first meeting of the Wanganui Education Board for this year was held yesterday afternoon. Mr E. F. Hemin*way presided. Others present were Messrs J. Aitken, W. Benefield, A. S. Coleman, P. Munro, J. K. Hornblow, R. Dukeson, M. H. Oram and Colonel J. H. Whyte. A message of regret at being unable to attend was received from Mr J. S. Tingev, of Feilding. He desired that bis keen appreciation of Sir Swanger’s past services and best wishes for his future be conveyed to Mr Swanger. Tbe Education Department, it was reported, bad authorised a grant for the erection of a now school building of one room at Makino Road. The architect expected to be able to make a commencement with the work earlynext month. When tbe building was erected the board would be in a position to complete tbe sale of the old building and site to tbe Makino Hall Committee. A grant had also been authorised for tbe erection of an additional class-room at Parowanui. This work would be commenced next month.

] t was reported that ths work necesfiary for the remodelling of the Carnarvon School building was well in hand and would be expedited with a view to completion before the commencement of the school year. A sevenwire fence had been erected along the western boundary of the teacher's residence at Awahuri. Discussing the board’s section in Cuba Street, Palmerston North, Mr Oram said that at present this section of about three acres was in a most unsatisfactory state and covered with long grass which was a menace at this time of the year. The section was also used as a dumping ground for rubbish. Mr Oram said that an offer had been made to lease the section at £3 per year, and as it would be fenced and looked after, it would be advisable to let it. The board decided to follow Mr Oram’s recommendation. The chairman complimented the architect (Mr Hodge) on his action in buying large quantities of supplies, which he knew would be wanted during the year, at prices ruling prior to the increase in the exchange rate. The board thproughly endorsed the architect’s action. .. It was decided that, in rationing the work among teachers, prefefence be given to those who had only one term of teaching last year. In discussing instruction given to the children regarding motor traffic, Mr Hornblow said that flying metal was as dangerous as the cars themselves. It was resolved that . th l llanawatu County Council be advised ■that teachers were instructing children in road safety as suggested. The resignation of Mr G.
