THE DAIRY INDUSTRY

FACTORY REPRESENTATIVES’ RESOLUTIONS. Co-ordination of interests by tire co-operative units in the dairy industry was discussed at a meet in a in Palmerston North yesterday of thirty representatives of co-operative dairy factory district associations. Mr A. Morton, president of the National Dairy Association, was in the chair. The Hawke’s Bay, Bnsli, North Auckland, South Wairarapa, Wairarapa Federation, Manawatu, South Auckland, Taranaki Federation and East Coast districts were represented, while also present were representatives of the New Zealand Co-operative Rennet Company and the Egmont Co-op-erative Box Factory. The importance of retaining the available supply of veils for the New Zealand Rennet Company was fully discussed and great concern was shown as to the position in which the company was placed. The following resolution was passed: “That tins meeting has fully considered the rennet requirements of the dairy industry and the position that has arisen owing to the export of veils. It is our unanimous opinion that, for the protection of cheese manufacturers, the export of veils should be prohibited entirely for the coming season, ana that export in future years should be subject to a special license and should be only for any excess over a quantity providing an ample reserve in New Zealand. The veils do not yet l>elong to exporters, afid if prolnbition of export is notified at this stage, it is a matter in which dairy farmers and dairy factories are most concerned. Wo are convinced that these interests will be best served by the government fixing a definite price based on the average world value, and that all the veils produced should be made available to the New Zealand Co-operative Rennet Company’, which is owned by the cheese-making industry.” , , i i A lengtliv discussion next took place as to the quality of factory requisites •which have been supplied to the dairy industry, and it was stated by the chairman that the executive of the N.D.A. had approached the Government some months ago with a request that the Scientific and Industrial Research Department should immediately set ni) a standards department, whereby dairy factory requisites in the future could he procured on a specification which would conform with the minimum standards as laid down by the department. The meeting was or the unanimous opinion that this was particularly necessary for cheese bandage, salt, parchment,_ rennet and cheese colour. A resolution to this effect was carried. The principle of co-operative buying was discussed fully’, the following resolution then being carried unanimously: “That this meeting considers that the principle of co-operative buying should he as far as possible observed bv the co-operative dairy companies, and that its own importing and manufacturing supply companies, such as the N.D.A., the Egmont Cooperative Box Company and the Nev Zealand Co-operative Rennet Company’, should receive an entire measure of support, and that it is the opinion of this meeting that no co-operative supply company’s price should be judged by the price given, but that it should he judged after the rebate lias been taken into account at the end of the season, and that the quality of goods also should be taken into account.”

The meeting was unanimous that wherever possible British goods should be purchased, and in this regard the chairman announced that the association had just completed an agreement with an oil company with regard to the distribution of lubricating oils. In support of this the following motion was carried after a representative of the firm concerned had addressed the gathering: “This meeting of dairy representatives confirms the principle of purchasing British lubricating oils through the National Dairy Association, and undertakes to use its best endeavours to further the project by co-operating with the Dairy Association, whose aim is to sell to the dairy indu’strv and farming community a first-grade British product at the lowest possible cost.”
