CHAMPION BOXERS TO MEET.

OXLEY v. HUGHES. For a number of years now tho fashion in boxing has changed as in other brands of sport. There was a time when tho'public clamoured for the big men, heuvyweights and bruisers, but now the lightweights are coming into their own and except for world championship events as much, if not more, patronage is bestowed on clever feathers, lights and welters than on their heavier brothers. Tho reason for this is not hard to seek, as invariably the public get a run for their money in the little men and it is only when one stops a particularly hard blow or a stray shot gets home on a spot that tells that the bout does not go the scheduled distance. More fights, by ten to one, have been won on points than by the short routo in the lightweight classes, whereas the proportion of wins by the K.O. method predominates in the heavyweight contests. Archie Hughes, the Dominion holder of the lightweight championship, is undoubtedly a clever boxer, one of tho best in his weight Newj Zealand has ever had, but in Oxley he has his equal, and with two such fast and clever boxers meeting for the third time, after two unsatisfactory decisions, the boxing enthusiasts of Palmerston North and district will see a fight that will be worth going many miles to see. Tho Manawatu Boxing Association havo been trying for several months to arrange this fight, and their efforts are appreciated by all lovers of boxing. That the attendance will bo big goes without saying. Pahiatua alone will send a contingent that will half fill the Opera House on Monday night next, so tho local supporters are advised to book earlv at the Central Bookin'? Office on Friday, when the plans open. Seats may be reserved in circle, o.s. stalls c:: ringside. Tho combatants in the five preliminary' bouts have been carefully selected.
