CHARGES OF FORGERY.
SENTENCE OF IMPRISONMENT. Per , Press Association. CHRISTCHURCH, Dec. 15. At the Supreme Court James Garfield Heath, on three charges of forgery, was sent to gaol for three months. Heath had pleaded guilty to giving false testimonials when applying for a position. Counsel said that prisoner was 32 ydars of age, a married man living apart from liis wife. His lapse was due to the influence of had companions.
This was the man who secured a position as engineer-clerk to the Kaikoura County Council and held it for three days. His Honour Mr Justice Ostler said that forgery was a serious crime.
Accused appeared in tho Magistrate’s Court at Palmerston North on November 26, charged that, on or about February 10 last, at Palmerston North, lie received a typewriter valued at £lB 18s, the property of Messrs Spooner, Ltd., knowing it to have been dishonestly obtained. He was further charged that, on or about June 21, at Palmerston North, he did forge a document purporting to be a certified copy of a testimonial issued to him by the Murray Shire Council of Mathoura, New South Wales on March 28, 1932, with the intention that it should be used or acted upon as if it were genuine. Accused pleaded guilty to the first charge. Ho was sentenced to one month’s imprisonment with hard labour on the charge concerning the typewriter and was remanded to appear at Christchurch on the other charge.
