RACING NEWS

FROM STABLEAND COURSE. (By “Binocular-”) Just An Idea looked very robust at Feilding and his condition gave out early, 110 was pulled up before tho finish of tho Waituna Hurdles on the opening day. La Moderne was strongly supported for the principal events at Feilding, hut while tho filly ran good races she was beaten out of tho money each day. The former Awaptdu representative fled Bank retains all his jumping ability, but ho was beaten for pace at tho finish of his races at Feilding. Miss Hastings had 91 ten-shilling tickets invested upon her on tho opening day, but the figures were reversed on tho second day when she ran second to Okopua. Her dividend was a good one. Double lied, an attractive looking chestnut by lied Dennis from Redside, was made favourite for the Novice Stakes on the second day at Feilding, but he failed to repeat his first day’s However, he should come good. Maypay has not as yet displayed the brilliance of her older brother, Autopay, and she has disappointed her connections more than ouce when racing in public. She is, nevertheless, a shapely sort and should make amends. Civility was a splendid mare in her day and there is every reason to anticipate that her son by Grand Knight, who races under the cognomen of Bold Baron, will possess the family pace. He is meantime somewhat green. Chief Line, who originally carried the colours of Air A. Symc when trained at Awapuni, now races in the interests of Mr J. O’Brien, and is trained by J. Fryer at Ilawera. He came in for strong support on tho second day at Feilding, but sacrificed his chances by failing to get away smartly. The consistent Chopin did well to finish third in tho Feilding Cup, for in the early stages of flic race he was at the rear of the field. On the second day 7id was . again badly drawn at tho barrier and had to be content with fifth place. His turn will come when better favoured in the running. S. Wilson, who has been doing ’"a lot of riding for Alt* W. 11. Ballinger with a fair degree of success, was the rider of Gay Court when the Gainscourt gelding won the Levin Handicap. He will attend Ihe Auckland Cup meeting where ho has been engaged to pilot My Own, providing the mare goes north. An onlooker at tho Feilding meeting was W. Broughton, who returned from Sydney earlier in the week. Ho originally went across to ride Araunah, but his visit extended over several months, lie is again at Awapuni, and as he can go to scale at 7.3, ho should not lack for engagements. . , A youngster who attracted considerable attention at Feilding was Porotiti, who is by Limond from Oliui (sister to la mate te and Tukia). While Oliui did not enjoy tho record of her relatives, she nevertheless possessed plenty of speed, and Porotiti looks like reproducing it. It was his first race on Thursday. L. G. Morris will be at Ellerslic for tire opening day of the Christmas meeting, where he will be on Concentrate and Cadland. He will do the second day at Palmerston North, go back for the second day at Auckland, return again for the third day at Palmerston North, and travel back to Auckland for the last two days. B. 11. Morris will not bo at Auck- ■ land this year, doing Palmerston North and Marlon. The connections of Sanguine King, just a-s the gelding was looking particularly l well, had the bad luck to have him badly knocked about in the Lake Hack Handicap at tho Levin meeting, in which Bee Acre fell. Sanguine King was . unable to race at Feilding, and his injuries aro so serious as to keep him off the scene for several months. As far as track ability is concerned there is little (if any) difference between the brothers llanclagh and llurlingham, but when it comes to racing the latter has performed up to his track standard, while llanclagh is always liable to give a disappointing display, llurlingham has only once been out of a place-in eight starts this season, his record since racing at the Grand National meeting being five wins, a second and a third. These five wins would in past years have put him well out of the hack class, but the stakes have i unounted to only 410sovs., so ho is still eligible to compete in hack races. Ranelagh gained public approbation when ho won three races in succession in September, but he has failed to make good since. He has invariably done best on firm ground, and there were excuses for him at the’ Wellington meeting in October, but he had every opportunity at the rseu Zealand Cup gathering.

When a Parliamentary party were entertained at luncheon by the stewards of the Levin Racing Club at its annual meeting, the president (Mr W. G. Vickers) made a suggestion that has the merit of being original as well as practical (says an exchange). Mr Vickers said there were many things that could be done for the small country clubs, some of which, ho was afraid, would have to go out of action if such aid were not forthcoming. He had suggested to the members of Parliament that, if the Levin Club were fortunate enough to have another day’s racing per year granted it, it should be free of taxation. (Hear, hear.) He hoped that the members representing the district would convey that suggestion to the Minister of Internal Affairs. The club would be game enough to put on another meeting in February or March if the Government were game enough to remove the taxation. AUSTRALIAN ITEMS. PIKE AGAIN SUSPENDED. SYDNEY, Dec. 4. J.
