NORTHERN BOWLING CLUB.

The Northern Bowling, Croquet and Tennis Club will open its season on Saturday afternoon. Since tho club closed down in May last tho lawns have been given a great deal of attention and the members and visitors will find that the playing areas are in better order than at any previous time. The bowlers have bad a very convenient small pavilion erected for their special use. Tho tennis section will find quite a number of improvements, such as the extension of wire netting side fences, draining whore necessary, and returiing of tho courts where worn by players. The shrubberies have had attention and there can bo no doubt that the grounds and appurtenances of this progressive club will compare favourably with those of any other club. It will bo remembered that just before the winter tho pavilion was floored, enabling tho club to promote many card evenings and dances during the ensuing months. The membership last year was a record and although some members have resigned tho nominations of new ones have moro than restored the number lost. The second president of tho club, Mr L. R. Bryant (now resident in Nelson) is paying a visit to Palmerston North and will be present at the official opening on Saturday afternoon.

The Northern Club’s bowling members recently met and set up a very strong committee to manage their section’s activities. Tho players have all been graded and three selectors appointed. Arrangements havo been mado as in past years to coach the new members and as there are nine now players coming forward this year tho club coaches will have good material for development, It will bo the endeavour of the club to foster inter-club play this season and another innovation to be tried out will be ovening games for all members on regular evenings each week. Tho club has five trophies for competition amongst _lts members and then there is the cup which is competed for with Takaro Club. Tho male members of the tennis section have by moans of working bees assisted materially during tho last few weeks to get everything m order for the opening day. Another working bee of bowlers has boon engaged in painting tho seats, repairing buildings and rolling the greens.
