DESTRUCTION BY FIRE.
AVIATION COMPANY’S WORKS. LONDON, Oct. 12. Damage to the extent of £IOO,OOO was done by a mysterious fire which destroyed the Fairey Aviation Company’s experimental works at Hamble. The losses include ten of the world’s fastest seaplanes, which were being tested before delivery to the fleet air arm. Only one was saved. The fire originated in the main office and spread so rapidly that the huge wooden building was a burning mass before the brigades could get to work. The flames Tose 60 feet and were seen twenty miles away. The Fairey Aviation Company is one of the largest aircraft manufacturers in Great Britain, and the plant at Hawble was but the experimental works and seaplane slipways. The machinec destroyed are a naval type, anu the Fairey Firefly, which has a speed of over 2CO miles an hour. The firm is also famous for its all-metal propellers.
