ARBOR DAY

CELEBRATION AT WEST END. Although no trees were planted, 160 having been placed in tho grounds recently, the pupils of the West End School observed Arbor Day yesterday afternoon. They were addressed by the chairman of the school committee, Mr A. Penketh, who was introduced by the headmaster, Mr H. W. Jackson. Mr Penketh made reference to the significance of Arbor Day in New Zealand, and pointed out the various uses of trees. He told of their value for maturing the soil and how they assisted toward securing a good water supply ; how they protected the soil; of their production and their value for beautification purposes. Mr Penketh appealed to the children to conserve trees and to care particularly for those planted in the school grounds. At the gathering Arthur Fitch, a pupil of the school, was presented with the ICia Toa Football Club’s medal for the best Rugby player during the season.
