WEST END CLUB
TENNIS COURTS OPENED. A fine addition to the city’s tennis courts are those of the West End Tennis Club, which were officially opened by the Deputy-Mayor, Mr J. Hodgens, yesterday afternoon. There are lour good tennis courts in a pretty setting of garden plots and the various shrubs add considerably to the
appearance of the site. There was a good attendance at the ceremony, Air A. Penketli, chairman of the West End School Committee, introduced Air Hodgens and also paying a tribute to the organisation of Air G. K. Hoi Her, the lion. secretary, who, he said, had been responsible for the beautification of the grounds mid had been assisted by an enthusiastic body of helpers. Air Hodgens expressed bis pleasure at l>eing able to attend and apologised for the absence of Ate Mansford through pressure of business. He re-
called that possession of the site only recently had not been claimed by any body, but now it was so picturesque that strong exception would be taken to anyone but the West End School Committee claiming it as their own. The credit for its transformation was due to the committee, which had in many other directions beautified the school grounds. The new courts, however, were the happy fruition of the task, for now ex-pupils would be able to come back to the institution for their amusement. The DeputyMayor pointed out that Air G. K. Holder, the secretary of the School Committee and the captain of the tennis club, was responsible for the work. “On behalf of those interested I extend to him very hearty thanks in this regard. Ate L. Hogg, dull secretary, also paid a tribute to Air Holder's work.
