Red Sun (7.0) is an acceptor in the Alasterton Handicap on Saturday. He was omitted from the list telographed, but his name was included in the official list of acceptors.

Silver Streak has been rehandicappcd to 7.13 in the Tycho Hack Handicap at the South Canterbury meeting. Other Dunedin winners have escaped a penalty. The five-year-old Countersign has been sold by Air Al. O’Brien to a Tasmanian buyer and has already left for his new home.

The Auckland horseman, D. J. Burgess, who was injured when Commontator fell with him at the Alanawatu meeting, will resume race riding at the Avondalo fixture. Southdown, winner of the Dominion Handicap at Dunedin, is a half-brother to himself so far as his name is concerned, comments a Christchurch writer. An earlier son of his dam, Down South by Sercmond, racing in Australia, is also called Southdown.

It cannot bo claimed that the result of the principal handicap at Wingatui did much to elucidate form for the New Zealand Cup, except in a negative way (says a southern critic). In that respect it served a useful purpose—- in eliminating the whole fiold as November probabilities. Gold Trail, winner of the Rekereko Handicap at Otaki, halted in Palmerston North prior to continuing on hor journey to Auckland where she claims engagements in the Avondalo Guineas. She is by Chief Ruler from Pure Gold, a sister to Chrysology and a daughter by Psychology of Desert Gold.

Jaloux is reported from Riccarfon to be making good progress in bis New Zealand Cup preparation. Ho has not, been set nny record-breaking gallops, but be lias done well on the useful tasks allotted him. 'The writer adds that this treatment seems to suit him, as ho ran some solid races last season on this class of work.

Three more New Zealand Cup horses succeeded in getting on the winning list last week. Oratorian won at Randwick, Shatter at Wingatui, and Palm at Otaki. According to a report from Sydney, the Riccarfon gelding. Grecian Prince, has heen suffering from kidney trouble. This may have accounted for bis failure to 6how up in bis races. Silvox will bo improved by bis race in the AlcLean Stakes (says “Sontinal”). He jumped out smartly and ran on well until he failed through being backward. Silvox should win races this season. The Auckland jockeys, H. E. Coldfinch and F. E. Foster, are applying for jockeys’ licensee, their term of disqualification (12 months) having expired Inst Saturday. Tho Chiof Ruler two-year-old Solomon has been withdrawn from the Avondale Stakes. It is reported that there is nothing wrong with the half-brother to Sargon and he' will contest the Nursery Handicap on the second day. The three-year-old Russky, by Diacquenod from Alinsk, and the two-year-old colt by Liinond from IT. will leave for Sydney to-morrow to join ,J. T. Jamieson’s team at Randwick. Tho Limond colt was purchased at the Trentham sales last January for Air Al. Gcann, of Now South Wales, for 425 guineas. The successful steeplechaser Billy Boy, who distinguished himsolf by winning at Ellerslie, Trentham and Riccarfon through the winter, is still enjoying a spell. His trainer, R. W. Lewis, reports that he has done particularly well while he has been resting and has put on a lot, of flesh. It is probable that Billy Boy will bo placed in regular work again in about another four or five weeks. The Te Awainutu trainer, A. Look, will have a team of four, comprising Chateau, Sea Ruler, Dinelli and Lucidus, competing at the Avondale meeting. The two-year-old Impasto was also to have been a competitor at tho meeting, but, owing to a slight, trouble that developed in one of his hoofs, it has been decided to allow him to forgo his engagements. ...... It, is reported from Dannevn-ke that -Vlaliora, winner of last year’s Whyte Handicap, is still in a bad way from the injuries he received when he fell in a flat, race last June. Ho wrenched both hind fetlock joints badly and has been undertreatment over since. Both joints are still enlarged, and he will need a lengthy spell before undergoing another preparation. Irish Lancer, who scored his first win at Wingatui on Saturday, was bought as a yearling in England for his present Dunedin owner for 130 guineas. His sire Allenbv is by Bayardo from Tagalie, by Cyllene from Le Saucy, and his dam Bright Hacklo is by General Gough or Royal Hackle II from a mare by Radium from Airs Gamp, by St. Simon. 'Hula Belle is stated to have run two good races at Wingatui and she should be an early winner. At Winton, in November last, she won and ran second in six furlong races and was then given a good spell. She was successful over five furlongs last Timaru Cup day at 13 ashdyke. Hula Bello is an acceptor for two events at the corresponding fixture on Saturday. She is a four-year-old Australian-bred mare. . ~ There was an unusual incident in tne Spring Hurdles at Wingatui on Thursday Shipshape, one of the field of three, jumped erratically early and came down about seven furlongs from home but no damage was done to him or his rider, G. ba.lt. no careered past the winning post riderless, but was caught at the end of the straight. W Hogan, a son of P. P. Hogan, remounted him and completed the course, thus earning tho third prize of £5. Nomina-

tion and acceptance fees and the losing amount aggregated £6, so the “fiver” was useful. Hogan was applauded when he rode in. “I was hardly in the race from the start,” faid R. Reed, who had tho mount on tho favourite, Gaino Carrington, in the A.J.C. Derby when explaining the New Zealander’s failure. “Gaine Carrington got his tongue over tho bit. I think it must have been at the start, and his tongue was hanging out all tho way. Ho seemed to bo choking, and would not go kindly. Going out of the straight Prince Pombal and Bombastic slowed up and Prince Pombal also went wide. I had to take hold of Gaine Carrington, and then the other came all of a sudden and I went back.” With tho exception of £IOO won by Nightmarch, the prize-money for the first day of the A.J.C. meeting, amounting to £10,548, remained in New Soutii Wales. Tile biggest winners were Air R. R. Dangar (first Derby, Peter Pan, £4420, breeder’s premium for Derby winner £250), £4670; Air A. E. Blair (first Epsom Handicap, Chatham), £1631; and Air Hunter White (second, Derby, Oro), £IOOO. Shamfight should iiavo won the Alaungatua Handicap at AVingatui on Thursday (says the Press). When he was well out in front in the straight- his apprentice rider kept looking back at his pursuers until Tippling had drawn almost up to him. He then turned his attention to his own mount, but the damage had heen done, and Shamfight did not have tho time or the ground to recover from his temporary let-up. The stipendiary steward had the rider, N. Dwyer, before tho stewards. They gave him a warning that he must in future bo more carelul in handling his mounts.
