DEMAND FOR RANSOM.
REDUCTION REFUSED. SHANGHAI, Oct. 12. Writing on October 8 to her father, Mrs Muriel Pawley, who, with Mr Charles Corlcran, was captured by Manchurian bandits a month ago, says that the bandits absolutely refuse to reduce their demand for ransom from 1,000,000 dollars. “It is pretty well hell here,” she continues. “We received the parcels. Everything O.K. Bless you all for the lice powder. The lice are pretty bad, hut have not reached my chin. yet. Next time messengers come they must bring 30,000 dollars and 200 ounces of opium, else good-bye to our ears. The bandit chief is fed up with us. Trusting you implicitly. Please help us. Keeping our tails up.”
