CANDIDATES FOR LEGISLATIVE . COUNCIL. ‘ Per Press Association. WELLINGTON, Oct. 12. The Samoan correspondent of the Press Association writes from Apia on October 3: At Leauvas a new Catholic Church was officially opened by His Lordship Bishop Darnard on Thursday, September 29. The celebrations continued until the Saturday, there being a distribution of food on the Friday, tire time being also filled in with daiicing and contest singing by the various visiting villages. Over £IOOO was collected in donations from adherents of the Catholic Church throughout Samoa from visitors to the celebrations, and from others. The work of pulling down the old wooden buildings of Messrs Burns, Philp and Co.. is practically finished. Soon the new concrete structure will be on the way to completion. Tire building will improve Apia’s beach front enormously. The style of architecture is similar to that of the i lew Post Office which adjoins the new building. The prospects of a good cocoa harvest, commencing in November and continuing until March, are good. The weather lately has been ideal with just the right quantity of rain. The European copra markets show a slight improvement but no increase in price has vet been made to the native growers. Three steamers are due this month, two to load for the United Kingdom and Continental ports and one for American ports. Approximately 4500 tons will be shipped. . Five candidate? are reported to be spclcinu Legislative Council honours. Thev are Hon. S. H. Meredith (sitting member), Mr I H Carruthers (a merchant and planter) Mr J G Miodecke (a planter), Mr A. G. Smyth fmanager for Messrs Morris, Hedstrom, Ltd ) and Mr A. C. Gardiner (formerly a cocoa planter).
