The Governor-General and -the Lady Bledisloe returned to yesterday afternoon from a visit to Nelson and Picton.

Mr E. Maddison, who has been supervisor at the Pukekohc Post Office for the past eight years, has been promoted to the position of postmaster at Greytown, Wairl.rapa.

At yesterday’s meeting of the Manawatu County Council, the chairman, Cr W. E. Barber, was granted leave of absence through illness and the hope expressed for his speedy recovery. A London cablegram announces the death at the age of 69 years of Sir Herbert Nield, who had been Recorder of York since 1917 and who was M.P. for the Ealing division of Middlesex from 1906 to 1918.

Mr H. Cole, who recently retired from the Palmerston North Police Force, was yesterday appointed probation officer in succession to Colonel S. G. Sandle, who vacated the ppsition several weeks ago.

The Central School Committee, ah its meeting last evening, passed a motion of sympathy with the relatives of the late Mr M. Voss, who was at one time a member of the Hokowhitu School Committee.

A British Official .Wireless message states that the condition of Mr Winston Churchill is satisfactory and he is being moved to a nursing home from the hospital. He is still suffering from the attack of paratyphoid contracted while on a holiday in the Mediterranean.

A message from Gisborne states that the death occurred yesterday afternoon of Mr A. M. Beale, a well-known business man of the East Coast district and manager of the Waipiro Bay Trading Company, aged 74 years. Deceased was' a keen cricket enthusiast and president of the AVaiapu Cricket Association.

The death has occurred at Dunedin of Mr Christopher Conn, aged 61, who joined the railway service in 1886 and retired white stationed in the Auckland district. For the last _ 10 years of his service he was stationmaster at Frankton Junction and was traffic inspector for the area from Marton to Frankton.

A former regular soldier who cherished the distinction of having been included in guards of honour to Queen Victoria and the Prince of Wales, later Edward VH, Mr Patrick Starkey has died at Auckland at the age of 93. He had lived in New Zealand for nearly 70 years, having arrived in Auckland with the 18th Royal Irish Regiment. Cordial welcomes were extended by the chairman (Mr M. H. Oram) at the annual meeting of the Manawatu Aero Club last evening to Mr C. Freyberg, a qualified pilot, who has recently been transferred to Palmerston North as District Public Trustee, and was stated to have been an active and valued member of the Hawera Aero Club and Western Flying Federation; also Major L. McGaffin, formerly of the Hawke’s Bay Aero Club. At the annual meeting, last evening, of the Manawatu Aero Club, the incoming president, Mr W. A. Waters-, paid a tribute to the services of the retiring president, Mr M. H. Oram, as did Mr L. H. Collinson, who emphasised the splendid work -Mr Oram had done for aviation generally, particularly in local activities. He stated that Mr Oram was one of the pioneers in New Zealand aviation enterprise. Mr H. E. Edmunds endorsed these remarks and made appreciative reference to Mr Oram’s record of service. A hearty vote of thanks was passed with acclamation *to the retiring president.
