MAKOWHAI CAMP.
REDUCED ALLOCATION. A report was made at the Manawatu County Council meeting, yesterday, by the acting chairman (Cr J. H. Perrett) that the Government allocation for the maintenance of the Makowhai relief camp had been reduced. It appeared, Or Perrett said, that considerable assistance was given to the camps at other places in the way of donations of produce, etc., from settlers which had helped to reduce the cost of maintaining the camps to the Government. As far as the Makowliai camp was concerned, Cr Perrett was afraid there was not much chance of similar action taking place, as most of the adjacent settlers were returned soldiers who had their own difficulties to contend wjiih, and could not be expected to make gifts to the camp He suggested that to. deal with the situation a meeting of the settlers should be called, when it could be made known that it was apparently the Government’s intentions to have the reduction in the allocation to the camp balanced by way of donations of produce, meat, etc., from settlers who had so far done nothing in the direction of supplementing the food supply at the camp. The council was unanimous that this was the best course to pursue, Cr Perrett undertaking to call the meeting.
