Great distress prevailed in the north-western and north-eastern districts of Cape Colony, it was reported. Sugar was selling at Is per lb. Dairying was reported to he making rapid. progress in Siberia, and Danislr enterprise was ruling a butter kingdom of 160,000 square miles there. It was predicted that before long Russia would become a serious competitor in European butter markets. The new agreement between the Government and the Manawatu Railway Company came into force oil this date.’
The congregation, of St. Patrick’s Church decided to build a Convent on the property in Broad Street at an estimated cost of £2OOO.
Differences were reported to exist among members of the Pohangina County Council over the unsettled question of the site of the proposed new Pohangina bridge. There were some sharp exchanges at the meeting. Flaxcutters were being sought to fill labour requirements in the industry in the Manawatu district.
Medium and heavy draught horses were selling at £33 to £36 and light draughts at £27 to £3O. London cables reported a firm hemp market with good fair Wellington grade at £35 a ton. The cheese market was firm at 53s per cwt.
