BASKETBALL
THIRD ANNUAL DINNER. The basketball players of the Palmerston North Y.M.C.A. held their third annual dinner last evening in Messrs Collinson and Cunninghame’s tearooms. Mr C. Woods, the physical director, presided over an attendance of about 150, to whom he extended a very hearty welcome. In tho course of his remarks Mr Woods mentioned that basketball had gained an impetus which had made this season the most successful in the history. of the Y.M.C.A. in Palmerston North.
After dinner the following trophies which were won during the year were presented : Hopwood Challenge Shield, donated by Mr A. Hopwood, for the men’s inter-liouso competition and won by Hopwood Hardware team (captain, Mr G. Foster); Ford Motors Cup, donated by Mr J. Selwyn, for the ladies’' inter-house competition and won by Hosiery Factory A team (captain, Miss F. Young); Y.M.C.A. Challenge Shield, donated bv the Y.M.C.A. for the Y.M.C.A. senior men’s competition and won by Victors’ team (captain, Mr C. McMinn); Sealed Handicap Cup, donated by Ford Motors workshop for the Y.M.C.A. senior men’s sealed handicap competition, and won by Unity team (captain, Mr O. Goodjohn). , Tlie toasts honoured during the evening were : —The King, the chairman; “AVinning Teams,” Mr C. Rumble, responded to by the captains; “Referees and Officials.” Miss Cadle and Mr W. J. Young, responded to by Mr C. Woods; “Donors of Trophies,” Mr T. Twigge, responded to by Messrs H. Hopwood, J. Selwyn and F. Senter.
Items were rendered by Misses AVhitall, Purton and Smith (songs) and there was a humorous number by Messrs G. Foster. T. Twigge and G. Bettle. Miss L. Sinclair and Mr I. Speight acted as accompanists. Community singing was indulged in, Mr J. Selwyn being the leader.
