RACING NEWS

FROM STABLEAND COURSE. (By “Binocular.”) The death has occurred of Mr James O’Connor, the owner-trainer of Master Lu. The Auckland horseman, E. A. Keesing, will come south to ride at the Otaki meeting.

K. Voitre has been engaged to pilot Princess Doreen in the Avondale Stakes and Tea Trader in the guineas. E. Ludlow, who has had two wins recently on Minerval, at Ashburton and Geraldine, will be his pilot in the New Zealand Cup.

A. Gilmer has been engaged to ride Air Laddie and Okopua in their hurdle engagements on the respective days at the Otaki meeting.

An unexpected return to the racing track has been made by Moorbird, who was infolded to be retired to the stud some time ago.

The Gay Shield—Lady Marie two-year-old filly has been named Gay Sheila and the Gay Shield —Phaolo filly Coronis. Both are engaged in the Avondale Stakes. Resinous, by Limond from Amyrin, the dam of Bathos, Grotesque (in Australia), and Melissa, is doing stud duty. Resinous was at one time trained at Awapuni and showed brilliance in his track work, but an accident intervened.

Elude is stated to have been responsible for an attractive performance in the concluding event at Geraldine. He was always up near the front, and he raced on solidly to finish fourth. It is a stronger field than he had tackled previously. An American paper States that AV. Eliott, who rode Phar Lap to victory in the Agua C'aliente Handicap, has taken legal proceedings against Mr W. S. Kilner, for whom he contracted to ride. Elliott is claiming 5000 dollars for his services up to the time when, he alleges, the engagement was abruptly terminated. Cheap Money, a filly by Paper Money from Tortrix, who was purchased at the yearling sales for 40gns, is well spoken of at Riccarton. This youngster is a sister to Caterpillar and a half-sister to Page Boy and Baroscope. She is expected to turn out a bargain. .. Teller’s record since passing into tne hands of Mr J. L. Dunn towards the close of last season has been an excellent one, for he has won five races for his new owner over sprint and distance courses. An Awaupuni mentor expressed regret at the time of the sale that he had not had the opportunity of securing the Paper Money gelding for racing on the West Coast. W hue his prediction that Teller would come good is now substantiated, in all probability he little anticipated that the gelding would rise to its present heights. Among the youngsters entered for the Prince of Wales Stakes at the Napier Po.ik meeting is an unnamed filly by Chief Ruler from the champion mare, Desert Gold, lhis filly is bred on similar lines to Princess Doreen, winner of the Marton Juvenile Plate, as both are by Chief Ruler, and Princess Doreen is from D’Oro. a full-sister to Desert Gold. Both were bred by Mr 'X' jx Lowry, whose colours the unnamed filly will carry. The Riccarton trainer A. E. WormalcJ had a notable record at the Geraldine meeting. He has only two horses in work, and ho started them five times during the two days, for four wins and a third. Ranelagli was third on Thursday, and won twice on Saturday, while Hurlingham was a winner each dav. The feat was made more unusual by the fact that the two horses are brothere. It is not easy to recall a case of two brothers winning three races on tne S ™°two-year-old half-brother to Tankard, bv Weathcrvane, is being trained at Hawera, and he showed up well in a sprint over a couple Of furlongs twice last week. Tankard was an exceptionally promising two-year-old last season, but met with an Ull The el Lefghton filly Late Jest lias been putting up some speedy gallops at Trentham and should show to advantage before the spring meetings are over. In herfirst race in public as a two-year-old last season this filly ran second to Head Lady m * l>o Nursery Handicap at the Manawatu summer meeting and shortly afterwards won a six-furlong race at Rangitikoi. Her second to Headmaster in the Cloverlea Handicap, run over five furlongs at Awapuni last April, was also an encouraging effort, and the first time she repeats that form she will be hard to beat over a sprint distance. WELLINGTON RACING CLUB. CLOSING OF NOMINATIONS.
