SMOKING IN BED.
WELLINGTON, Sept. 27. Severe burns to the back and shoulders, which necessitated his removal to the hospital by the City Ambulance early this morning, were received by Mr Frank Morton when he fell asleep while smoking in bed at the Masonic Hotel, Cuba Street. The bedding caught fire, and Mr Morton was apparently overcome by the fumes, for lie was badly burnt before the alarm was given by another boarder. The fire brigade was called and’ had no difficulty in confining the fire to Mr Morton’s room. Most of the damage was done to the bed. The hospital authorities report today that Mr Morton is making satisfactory progress.
