NINTH ROYAL SHOW.

THE EVENT OF THE YEAR. The grealest event of the year associated with agricultural and pastoral pursuits will take place at Palmerston North on November 2,3, 4 and 5 next. This is the ninth Royal Agricultural £>how. These premier fixtures are designed to bring together in the show ring the choicest quality of the various breeds of horses, cattle, sheep and pigs in New Zealand. Although Palmerston North has been chosen as the venue for this year’s Royal Show because of its locality and the ample accommodation it possesses for holding a national exhibition, Manawatu business men will doubtless recognise the high value of the choice to themselves and will, it its hoped, support the A. and P. Association accordingly. It is good business to keep an eye to the future in this connection. Of the. eight Royal Shows that have been held in New Zealand four have been in the South Island and four in the North Island —and of the four in the North Island two have already been held at Palmerston North, which is recognised as an important stock centre. It is very desirable that the high reputation established by the first and fifth Royal Shows at Palmerston North should be maintained this year, and this can be done by generous entries. Ring competitions always excite keen public attention, and it is interesting to note that at the first Royal Show at Palmerston North in 1924 the entries (competitions) totalled 278, a number that lias not been exceeded at any of tho succeeding shows. At that show', too, there were 641 horses, another record still unbeaten. In cattle and sheep Palmerston North won approbation for the large number of its entries, whilst the 1928 Royal Show held here established a new record in pigs with 219 entries. Swine husbandry has been largely developed throughout the Manawatu and adjoining districts during recent years, and with similar expansion m other'dairying territories throughout New Zealand it is confidently hoped that this year’s Royal Show will witness the best show of pigs that has ever boon put upon exhibition in this Dominion. There is additional merit in exhibiting at a Royal Show, and all supporters of A. and P. Associations will doubtless make special efforts to he worthily represented at this year s exhibition. The closing dates for entries should not bo forgotten; they are fully advertised in another column.
