ROYAL AIR FORCE.
EXTENSION OF SCOPE,
(Britsh Official Wireless.) RUGBY, Sept. 14
An important extension of the scope of the Royal Air Force is marked by an order for “Cloud” amphibian aircraft placed with Saunders Roe, Ltd. These aircraft can operate on land and water and in the air. With the wheels wound down into position, the craft can take off from an ordinary land aerodrome, and when the pilot has wound up the wheels into position at the sides of the boat the hull can alight on water. When going ashore the machine can taxi to the slipway and, the wheels having been wound down, can taxi up the slipway without further preparation. The latter, from the operational point of view, represents a great advance. Fitted with two Armstrong Siddeley double Mongoose engines of 340 horsepower, the machines can cruise at 100 miles an hour, with a top speed of 120 miles an hour. Their endurance with a full load is four hours.
