(From Our Own Correspondent.) SHANNON, Sept. 15. Some time ago Mr .J. Linklater M.P., was approached by the local Relief Workers' Association, asking that free medical attention and medicino be provided for tlio unemployed. Mr Linklater placed the proposal beforo tho Hospital Board, with the result that a meeting of local representatives met the board members in the Council Chambers on Tuesday afternoon to discuss the desirability of establishing a district nurse. Representing the Hospital Board were Mr lioriiblow, Mr I’hillipps, Mr Monk, and Mr J. A. Nash, M.L\ Mr J. Linklater, M.P., was also present. The Mayor (Mr E. Butt) extended a weleomo to the visitors. It was pointed out that it might be possible to arrange for a district nurso to work Koxton and Shannon, and if such an arrangements could be arrived at tho cost per year should bo between £IBO to £2OO. Of this amount the Hospital Board would find half, the balanco to bo divided between the two districts concerned. It was resolved that those present form a committee and to call a public meeting for next week, when it is anticipated that final arrangements for tho raising of Shannon's contribution will bn made and enable representatives to confer with Foxton on the matter. At the close of the meeting the visiting representatives were thanked for their attendance and the valuable information they had imparted. Mcsdamos Butler and Black had to play off for the trophy at the afternoon euchre party on Tuesday, and after an interesting game Mrs Black proved the winner. There was tho usual attendance, and Mosdames Picard and Ingloy were the hostesses. The annual meeting of the Shannon Tennis Club was held in the Council Chambers, there being a small 'attendance. Mr F. Thurston presided. Tho president reported that the season had been a suci ccssful one. Competitions had been keen both in local games and inter-club matches. Tho team did not finish on top, but tho games were played in the right spirit. Siuco last year tho gate entrance to tlio courts bad been renewed and is now in good condition. ‘"Wo have,’’ lie added, "quite a good balance now in hand (£27 10s) and should apply it to reducing our liabilities. Wo have been fortunate in having the services of Mr Ostler as club captain, also those of Mr Robinson, who ns secretary has given much time to tho club. There have been two "workling bees” recently, which members havo I very kindly attended, and valuable work lias'been done. More work, however, will ! require to be done to prepare the courts for the season. Thanks nre due to the ladies for attending to afternoon tea ami to the committee for co-operation. Thanks are also duo to the Press." Election of officers resulted: President. Mr Thurston: vice-presidents. Mr J. T. Bovis and Mr T. E. Moody; secretary, Mr Robinson: club captain. Mr 6. Graham; committee, Mrs Moynihnn, Miss Brown, Mrs Cronqucst, Messrs Kennedy, McKay and Thwaitcs; lion, auditor, Mr Braun: delegate Lawn Tennis Association, Mr Robinson. The resignation of the club captain, Mr Ostler, was received with regret. Tho balancesheet showed a surplus of £27 10s for the season. It was resolved to reduce the mortgage cn the courts by the sum of £25 and also that the subscriptions he the same as last year. After a discussion it was resolved that no afternoon tea be provided except on match days. It was resolved that opening day he fixed for October Bth and that invitations he sent to neighbouring clubs. The entering of a team in tho Munawatn Association's competition was left to the committee and club captain. It was resolved that the ladder rules be amended so that any player could challenge the player fourth on the ladder and i thereafter in rotation.
