DUTY ON MOTOR SPIRIT.
AN INCORKECT CLAIM,
Per Press Association. WELLINGTON, Sept. 16. When a dealer named Rataelo Alfano pleaded guilty in the Magistrate's Court to making a false claim for a refund of duty on motor spirit, tho Magistrate was asked to treat the matter as serious, the Registrar wishing it to act as a warning to fishermen that they would have to keep proper records.
Mr E. Page, S.M., said that Alfano’s offence was probably duo to lack of keeping proper records rather than to a fraudulent rendering of a return. The matter was brought under the notice of the department by defendant and his accountant themselves, but there was an obligation on people who mado these returns to keep proper records. He imposed a fine of £5.
