“INTERFERENCE.”
OPERATIC SOCIETY’S PLAY
Tho forthcoming presentation of “Interference'’ by the Palmerston North -Amateur Operatic and Dramatic Society—tho Central Relief will benefit—is causing considerable interest in the city. It is something new for the society, a really dramatic venture, but with Mr F. Cousins as producer, and performers of ability and intelligence Roland Pertweo s highly successful play should be greeted with a crowded auditorium at the Opera House on September £2. 23 and 24. Pcrtwee is a well-known English author and dramatist—he was also an actor for a tune—and “Interference” was first produced at St. Janies’ Theatre, London, in 1927, with no loss a notability than Gerald du Alaurior in the role to be played here by Mr M. H. Oram, and with such prominent Most End actresses as Hilda Mooro and Moyna McGill in support. Tho firm bought, “Interference” for Leon Gordon, of “White Cargo" fame, but it has not been done in Now Zealand before. ‘•lnterference” should furnish splendid entertainment for those who liko something really exciting, yet not melodramatic, combined with clever, natural acting and adequnto preesntation. The play opens in the consulting rooms of Sir John Marlay, M.D., London, and finishes in tragedy in the samo scene, and in the unfolding of the story we are presented mainly with tho nufortunate predicaments of Sir John, Lady Mariav, her first husband, Fhilip Voase. a drunkard who returns unexpectedly, arid a flambuoyant person named Deborah Kane, the lover of Voase. Tragedy enters into the life of each, and after an exciting time of blackmailing, a slight, theatrical glimpse into the newspaper world, and a poisoning, there comes happiness for Sir John and I.ady MRrlay. The societv has a splendid cast." including Miss U. Hancock as Deborah Kane. Mr Oram as Sir John, Miss Mavis Mortland. an attractive newcomer, as Lady Marlay. Mr A. Piz/.ey as Philip Voase, Mr C. X. Rabone—playgoers will remember his splendid performance in “Loyalties"—as Inspector Haines, of tho Metropolitan Police, Miss E. Nathan. Miss IV. Scott. Mrs L. Potter, Mr T. M. N. Rodgers and Mr E. G. Seeker. All the properties and scenery are being specially made for the society, and. the lighting and mounting will ho everything that is desirable. Once again the producer is having th» invaluable help of Mr C. McGrath with the properties, and Mrs H. Palmer, equally invaluable, is superintending the wardrobe department.
