GANDHI’S PROTEST
THREAT OF STARVATION
DEBATE IN ASSEMBLY.
LITTLE SYMPATHY AVITH GESTURE.
(United Press Association—By Electric Telegraph.—-Copyright.) Received September 15, 10.35 a.m. CALCUTTA, Sept. 14.
Gandhi’s starvation threat was the subject of a lively debate in the Indian Assembly.
A Hindu Nationalist fiercely attacked tho Government for “segregation’ of the depressed classes from tho caste Hindus by granting the former separate electorates, but other Indian members showed little sympathy with Gandhi’s gesture. The Calcutta Statesman says: “If Gandhi chooses to die, ho will not dio as ft hero, but dio to prevent larger freedom for millions whoso wrongs have stirred the imagination of the world.”
MR PATEL’S APPEAL.
LONDON, Sept. 14. V. J. Patel, ex-Spoaker of tho Indian Legislative Assembly, and Gandhi’s close friend, who is now in London, has cabled to Gandhi appealing to him to reconsider his fasting decision. “Your lifo is more precious than a settlement of tho communal or a hundred other problems,” ho added.
Gandhi threatened to starve to death as a protest against tho communal settlement made by the Government.
