DAMAGE TO LINE.

NEW APPROACH AT KOPUA

Work is proceeding very satisfactorily at the scene of the subsidence on the railway line near Kopua, but the connection could not be established to-day and the Hawke’s Bay and New Plymouth expresses were' consequently delayed again. The work of constructing the new approach may be completed by to-niglit, but it will, in all probability, take longer, although there are 100 men on the job. Although no official explanation has been made, the theory of residents in the locality is that the old approach was undermined by the diversion of a spring, which since the February earthquake of last year has been flowing in its old course at much diminished volume (says the Dannevirke News). Whatever the cause, the subsidence was fairly considerable, a private estimate placing the length at about 90 feet, and the depth at about 40 feet, the fall being towards the Manawatu River.
