SMALL FARM SCHEME.
DISCUSSION AT UNION MEETING.
At the mooting, this afternoon, of tho executive of the Dairy Farmers’ Union, a discussion took place on tho Government’s scliemo for small farms, Mr Short stating that tho Government should develop its own land, of which there was a good area in the Feilding district,
Mr Bond said that ho was willing to givo a man '26 acres rent free and rate free for five years, and he liad asked if the Government would give the man some assistance for a period. Apparently this could not be done unless he was prepared to sell or guarantee a renewal of the lease. There might be other similar cases, but apparently the Act was not elastic enough to deal with them, he added. Mr Poupard said the department probably wanted some security of tenure.
If the department advanced the amount for the purchase of stock, it would have security for its money, Mr Bond said.
Mr Lcgg suggested that the case mentioned by Mr Bond be brought under the notice of the Government.
Every farmer knew of badly worked farms that could be taken over and tho production increased, Mr Poupard assorted. He knew of a few thousand acres that were not yielding half the possible production. He considered that the Government was not taking all possible steps to get increased production.
Mr Boyce said he knew of land that was not producing nearly as much as it should. He blamed the abolition of the graduated land tax for the present state of affairs.
No resolution was proposed, and the discussion dropped.
