ROAD CYCLE RACES.

AMATEUR EVENT

Yesterday’s race conducted by the Manawatu Amateur Athletic and Cycling Club, which was held in ideal weather, was to Awahuri and return to Featherston Street, and attracted 14 competitors, including M. Hunt (Marton). The course was ridden in a very fast time by Astin—the best time to date for the distance. The first men to leave were Rogers and Lima. The limit men, who rode well going out, held their advantage at the turning point, followed by Little, E. Walker, Astin, Cooksley and R. Walker, who were followed by. the back markers a short distance away, these positions remaining until a short distance from home, when a bttnch of eight riders came into the straight for the final spurt, in which Astin prevailed. He was followed by Little, E. AValker, Davy and R. AValker, a length separating the first and last riders.

The results were as follow;—E. Astin (4min.) 1, G. Little (ssmin.) 2, E. YY’alker (4smin.) 3. Fastest times were recorded by the following: E. Astin 38min. 18sec., E. Walker 38min. 50 3-ssec., AI. Hunt 89min. 15sec. Next Saturday’s race, which is approximately 45 miles, is timed to start at 1.30 p.m. sharp. The route to be taken will be from the corner of Rangitikei Street and Featherston Street, via Boundary Road, Karere, Rangiotu, Himatangi, Alakowhai, Rongotea, Bunnythorpe - Kairanga Road, back to the starting point.

COUNTIES’ CLUB RACE.

On Saturday the Counties’ Cash Cycling Club will stage a preliminary contest to the big Wanganui race by furthering their Boucher Cup series with a 54-mile race; commencing from Church Street, near Linton Street, and travelling by way of Foxton, Shannon, Tokomaru and Linton to conclude at the Sportsground. The limit men will be sent off at 1 p.m. sharp. The handicaps are as follow: —S. Ward, T. French, A. Jones 37min; G. Hunt 30: J. Christensen, A. Robinson 22; A. Jeffries. A. Ganderton 12: T.
