(From Our Own Correspondent.) FOXTON, Sept. 15. The monthly meeting o£ the Borough Council was held last evening and was presided over by the Mayor (Mr Perreau). A motion of sympathy was passed to Air C. Maclean (gas manager) in the death of his mother at Coromandel. The poundkeeper reported that four head of stock had been impounded. The road foreman reported breaks in the bitumen in various streets; that the culvert at the intersection of Baker and Avonue Streets would be repaired as soon as pipes came to hand; that roads and streets had been graded and Avenue Road restricted to 17 feet by placing shoulders along the sides. The waterworks foreman reported that 1,950,000 gallons of water were pumped during the month. The health officer reported on his inspection of the borough during August. Accounts amounting to £2182 0s Id were passed for payment. A letter was received from the Nelson City Council asking for support in the suppression of detrimental press reports concerning New Zealand. It was decided to support the request. The Manawatu County Council wrote stating that the Borough Council’s requests for additional posts on tho Whirokino Road as flood indicators was being investigated. The Moutoa Drainage Board acknowledged the council’s complimentary letter regarding the Main Drain floogates. Miss J. Ellwood was appointed librarian in placo of Miss D. Griffin, who has resigned to accept a position at Palmerston North. Cr. Robinson suggested allowing borough section holders who were unable to pay their rates to work these off. The Mayor explained that the suggestion was impossible of execution. Tho treasurer reported as follows: During August tho sum of £1179 8s lOd was received and banked. The accounts at credit were: Rate arrears £571 11s 2d, cemetery £BB 63 6d, heavy traffic £lO 17s Id, library £36 19s Id, reserves £l5O 14s Bd, temporary deposits £4OO, waterworks £303 5s lOd. Tho town clerk reported on tho working of the gasworks for July: Tho amount of gas manufactured was 362,200 ft which with the amount in the holder on July 1,7,000 ft. made a total of 369,200 ft; during the month 264,400 ft was used by consumers, 34,000 ft at the works and thero was 7,600 ft in the holder on July 31, making a total of 306,000 ft accounted for and leaving 63,200 ft representing 17.1 per cent, unaccounted for.
