PAHIATUA, Sept. 13. The Mayor at the monthly meeting of the Borough Council last evening said that when the recent heavy Hood carried away portion of the old town traffic bridgo prompt measures _ were taken to arrange with the traffio in the .best way Eossible. An unemployed resident had ecn appointed to look after the cars parkod on tho Mangamutu side of tho bridgo. Tho settlers at Mangahao were circularised to this effect and advised also that a number of business people would convey goods from the shops to the cars on the other side of the bridgo. It was considered quite impossible to reconstruct a portidn of tho old bridge. An extra gang was operating now on the new structure and it was estimated that tho structure would be open somowhcro about the beginning of December. He thought that the counoil had dono cvorything practicable under the circumstances. In reply to Cr A. D. Donald, the Mayor said the new bridgo would be ready for traffio perhaps at the end of November, or by the. beginning of December at least. The bridge would not be quite finished then but traffic, even for tho cartage of wool, would be able to use it. It was decided to inspect the site and take stops to have tho ford thrown open for such traffio as cared to use it. Estimates from the Main Highways Board showed that maintenance subsidies had been granted as follow: Main Street £126, Mangahao Road £147, both £3 for £l. Mr G. Matthews was reappointed caretaker of tho town tennis courts. Tho annual mooting of the Domain Board (comprising the Borough Councillors) was held in conjunction with the meeting of the council. A credit of £l4O 12s 8d was brought forward from tho previous year. Rent received had been £3, interest on moneys in the Post Office Savings Bank, £5 8s lOd; credit now £149 Is 6d. There had been no expenditure. In reply to Cr Hodd, the town clerk said that the rates still outstanding from last year wero between £4OO and £SOO. The little daughter of Mr and Mrs A. P. (Gus) Dougherty, of Hukanui, is an inmate of the Pahiatua Publio Hospital, suffering from sovero burns caused by boiling water. The Day Cup handicap competition among tho men of tho Pahiatua Golf Club is now nearing its concluding stages. Tho eight players left in will now engage in a knock-out competition to decide the winner. Tho draw is as follow:—P, Lloyd (24) v. J. G. Swainson (5) ; H. C. Marsh (15) v. N. Judd (18) ; E. Scandrett (15) v. D. Lynch (11); VV. H. Watson (15 v. S. K. Siddells (9). '

In tho election for one councillor on tho Ekotahuna County Council for the west riding, C. E. Goss polled 53 votes and J. P- Petersen 52 votes. There was ono informal vote. A recount is to take place on Wednesday next. •
