OBITUARY

MR H. S. VALENTINE

A message from Dunedin announces tho death of Mr Hugh Sutherland Valentine, aged 84 years, formerly general manager of the New Zealand Agricultural Company and a member qt tho House of Representatives for VVaikaia from 1887 until 1890, and tor Tuapeka from 1890 until 1893. Mi Valentine had the distinction of being a life fellow of the Royal Colonial Institute, a life fellow of the Geograpliical Society, a lite member of the London Chamber of Commerce, and a member of the Royal Agricultural Society, England.

MR G. MACKAY

There passed away at the Dannevirke Hospital on Monday morning, Mr George Mackay, of Kumeroa. Mr Mackay was an old resident of the district, arriving there 40 years ago with his father, when he took up a bush section on Totara Road. He was of a quiet and generous disposition, and was extremely popular. Deceased leaves two sisters and six brothers, two of whom, Messrs J. and James Mackay, have resided in recent years with their brother at Kumeroa.

MR E. KEMP

With the passing of Mr Edward Kemp, at the age of 77 years, yesterday, the Kumeroa district lost one who had been long associated with it. He had farmed the district for over 40 years. Mr Kemp is survived by his widow, two sons, Messrs Frederick William Kemp (Kumeroa) and Francis E. Kemp (Maingatainoka), and seven daughters, Mesdames Iggleden (Pahiatua), Maher (Lower Hutt), Carlisle (Wellington), Kemp (Martinborough), Misses Violet and May Kemp (Lower Flutt), and Miss Ella Kemp (Kumeroa).

MR J. N. ARMIT.

Mr Joseph Napier Armit, who died suddenly at Hunterville on Thursday last, was one of the best-known residents of that district. A son of Mr J. B. Armit, of Wellington, the late Mr Armit, who was 50 years of age, was born in Wellington, and took up farming pursuits at an early age. For the past sixteen years he had been farming on his own account at Hunterville. He was a member of the Farmers’ Union, and also took an active interest in athletics. The late Mr Armit is survived by his wife and two sons. There was a large attendance at the funeral at Hunterville on Saturdav last, the service being conducted Cy Rev. C. It. Kreeft.

MR ANDREW BUCHANAN.

The many friends of Mr Andrew Buchanan, of Palmerston North, w, regret to learn of his death, which took place to-day. The deceased gentleman was 72 years of age and had resided in Palmerston North for a large number of years. He was wellknown as a breeder of pedigree Jersey cattle and for his interest in local body work, being a member of tho Manawatu-Oroua River Board at the time of his death. He leaves a widow and an adult family.
