SEVERE WEATHER.
BRIDGES BUFFETED.
FLOODING OF DRAINS. Traffic and railway bridges have been severely tested by flood waters, as q result of the week-end deluge, ana the Fitzherbert bridge, although subjeted to a heavy buffeting, is reported to be showing no signs of strain. Bourke’s Drain is in a flooded state and this morning, on the river side of the floodgate at the ltangiotu bridge, the water was level with the top of the stop-banks, which were the only protection against inundation. This was threatened hourly by any appreciable rise in the level of the water, which was backing up from tho Manawatu River.
Tho water was very high in the Mangaone Stream, over which the iTjain highway crosses near Awapuni, and was within a few feet of the stringers carrying the decking of tho road and railway bridges. There were a great deal of surface water lying about in paddocks.
