(From Our Own Correspondent.) LINTON, Aug. 26. Tho monthly meeting of tho Linton branch of the Farmer’s Union was held on Wednesday evening. The correspondence included letters from tho provincial sec.-c----tary in referent o io trading eoncosions and n connection with 1' >' remit recently forwarded dealing with tho giving of tho time to telephone subscribers, and suggesting that a deputation wait on tno Chief Postmaster. A letter was received from tho Women’s Institute accepting tho offer to co-operate at the annual concert. The delegate reported on the remits recently forwarded to tho executive meeting. It was cic- ici'd to aria go. if posible, an address on electricity at tho next meeting. Ar interesting address was given on “Oil Production,” the lecturer explaining how cil was obtained and then refined, giving oil the various products. This address was accompanied by films depicting the junglo in tho East Indies, tho cutting of roads and the erection of oil derricks. Then followed the drilling of the holes, showing tho drills used and, when tho oil had been reached, how it was piped to tho refineries. An interesting .feature was tho manufacture of cases and tins by mechanical processes. At the conclusion of his address the lecturer was thanked by Mr Greer on behalf of the audience.

Following up their annual ball, tho bachelors of the district gave another very enjoyable evening in tho form of a masquerado ball on Tuesday. An orchestra played stirring music and a good night’s fun was enjoyed by everyone, paper hats and masks providing a lot of amusement. The hall was decked out in a novel way with the aid of streamers, pungas and coloured lights, and tho results well justified tho time spent by the committee in catering for everyone’s enjoyment. Mr W. Hunter and Miss L. Gough won the prizo for tho Monte Carlo waltz. Tho duties of M.C. woro carried out by Messrs 0. Batchelor and N. Groer in their usual capable manner.
