Per Press Association
WELLINGTON, Aug. 24
Tn conjunction with the inquest, the preliminary hearing is proceeding in the Magistrate’s Court of the charge against Paul Olsen Sabo, aged 41, taxi-driver, that, while in a state of intoxication, he was in charge of a motor car in Whitmore Street, and by an act of omission in relation thereto did cause the death of William Edwards.
Deceased was a carpenter and joiner, aged 33, of Eastbourne, who was fatally injured when knocked down by a motor in Whitmore Street on tho evening of July 30. Aledieal evidence was given that, on being examined at tho Police Station, accused was under the influence of liquor and in a state which would preclude him from driving a car. “He was not very bad,” said a medical man, “but still quite had enough, and should not drive a car in that state.”
William Lawrence Alarehbanks said that on July 30 he was behind a ear, No. 0014, and by the manner it was driven ho thought a learner was at tho wheel. He followed the car into Whitmore Street, where the righthand mudguard hit a man. Aftor running over the man tho car stopped momentarily and then was driven straight on again. The lights had been on, but were now switched off. Witness had intended to assist the injured man. but decided to follow the ear in front. It pulled up in Lambton Quay. When witness pulled up, tho driver was just getting out. An eye-witness of the accident, Archibald Hugh Bogle, surveyor, of Wanganui, also gave evidence.
