COMMISSIONER’S COMMENT. SYDNEY, July 28. Giving evidence to-day at the mechanical hare inquiry, Harold McCauley,- who was private secretary to the ex-Premier, Mr J. T. Lang, related conversations with an advertising agent, one Cruickshank, in regard to the Labour Party’s election advertising. Ho said he told Mr Cruickshank that ho did not think there would be any advertising for the Federal elections last year as there was no money in the party. Mr Cruickshank replied that ho could get money from the tin hare people. To this ho (Mr McCauley) answered: ‘‘lf you can, then, wo shall get the copy later.” After Mr Lang’s dismissal from office Air Cruickshank returned and asked about the State campaign advertising. Witness replied: “Wo are still hard up,” whereupon Air Cruickshank said: “It is all right. I have seen him (apparently meaning Swindell). He will stand tlie advertising to about £4000.” Mr Monahan, K.C., who is assisting the Commissioner: ’That was very rich generosity of him. Witness: Yes. Air Alonalian: Did you ask any question ? Witness: No. Air Alonalian: Was not Swindell frequently in your office? Witness: Not frequently. The question of restoring dog racing originally came from Air Swindell, who emphasised that there was £200,000 revenue in it for the Government at a time when money was badly, needed. Mr Alonalian: You led him to believe that legislation would go through ? Witness: Yes, without any trouble. The hearing was adjourned.
