CITY ABATTOIRS.

(To the Editor.) Sir, —At last Monday night’s meeting of the Works Committee of the City Council it was decided to raise the slaughtering fees to the local retailers or beef, mutton, etc., presumably with the hope of recouping some of the loss sustained in this unfortunate trading venture. Now I think that, though well intentioned, this method of attacking the problem of how to'make this department pay its way is altogether on wrong lines; and would never, with any hope of success, be applied in any private business concern. Quite apart from this, however, is the serious effect of the proposal on the consumers with large families, and the butchers, especially tire small man, who in these days of extraordinarily keen competition, is already hard put to it to make ends meet. Now, sir, I purpose to show where a vast improvement could be made in the interests of all, and add rejuvenation to this rather languishing concern. Firstly, by reorganisation of the staff. Put sentiment aside as has been done everywhere, and advertise the position of manager at £o or £6 per week at the outside—a remuneration that would bo quite in keeping with the responsibility involved, and provide a comfortable living for most of us, in these days of adversity. Secondly, reduce the permanent staff where necessary, and insist on strict supervision of all outgoings. Thirdly, overhaul the plant and buildings to have everything in up-to-date condition. In conclusion, .Mr Editor, I am quite certain that were the above somwhat drastic proposals brought into operation there would be no need to raise slaughtering fees, and with the income from houses and paddocks the abattoirs should more than pay their way. —I am, etc., RATEPAYER. Palmerston North, July 28, 1932.
