WORLD DEPRESSION
BRITAIN’S RECOVERY EFFORTS. OTHER NATIONS RELAXING. EFFECT IN THE FUTURE. (United Press Association—By Electric Telegraph.—Copyright.) Received May 19, 10.5 a.m. LONDON, May 18. The Westminster Bank Review, discussing the world’s financial problems, says:—
“Our return to the gold standard sooner or later is morally certain, but only on conditions which would ensure that the standard should not again be called upon to function under impracticable conditions. The world as a whole has sunk deepei into the trough of depression, while Britain lias been preoccupied in the task of saving her soul alive. “It would be dangerous to ignore the contingency that if the world outside these Islands continues indefinitely to relax . the grip on the standard of life it may be impossible to maintain the position we have gained with so much effort and selfsacrifice in the past, few months.’’
