DRAINAGE IN MAKERUA.

BOARD ADOPTS ESTIMATES. At a special meeting of the Makerua Drainage Board, held yesterday, estimates for the year 1932-33 were considered arid adopted. The board decided that no increase would be made in rates, which are to approximate £3621. It was also resolved that no new works would be undertaken during the ensuing year, but that the board’s funds be employed for the cleaning of drains and maintenance. General expenditure is estimated at £1266 10s. This includes £575' for bank overdraft interest, as compared with £525. 3s 6d last year. The pumping plant at Okuku, Mukapai and Mangaore are estimated to cost £430 for electric power, a large amount for removing water in one season; £2ll 12s 9d is required to pay for the power lines, and £IBO as the first instalment on the payment of the Okuku pump installation ; £635 16s has been estimated for wages; £B2O for contracts; and £25 for tools and plant for maintenance' work. Protection works are estimated to cost £470 a, and flood-gate maintenance £B3.

The board accepted a contract for cleaning and deepening Seifert’s Drain for 1 mile 13 chains and decided to call tenders for other cleaning work this week.
