MEETING OF COUNCIL. Th© Kiwitea County Council mot at Kimbolton yesterday for its ordinary monthly meeting, Cr. L. T. McLean presiding. Also present were Crs. Younger, Shannon, Hair, Wood, Stack, Brown, Williamson and Shaw. CORRESPONDENCE. Prom the Commissioner of Crown Lands, Wellington, forwarding schedule of “thirds” accrued from Crown sections in the county for the half-year ended March 31, amounting to £43 19s 3d.—Received.

From the Public Works Department, advising payment of subsidy as follows: —Maintenance of main highways, £212 Os Id; Haycock’s Bridge, £251 5s sd; England’s Bridge, £lso.—Received. From the Mayor of Feilding, re power board matters, and suggesting that in view of the recent local body deputation to the Minister of Public Works each of the six local bodies concerned in the Manawatu-Oroua Board district appoint a representative for the purpose of forming a permanent committee to further the objects for which the deputation proceeded to Wellington.—The council appointed the chairman to act on the committee.

From the Public Works Department,advising that the Main Highways Board had approved of the council’s application tor the payment of a £2 for £1 subsidy towards tho cost of the land survey (£l6 l'Js 4d) and land compensations (£ls) in connection with the construction of England’s bridgo.— Received. From tlio Department of Internal Affairs, advising that the Government has ct’ecided to bring down legislation during the present session temporarily modifying the provisions of Section 57 of the Counties Act, 1920, to the effect that the disqualification imposed by that section will not apply in respect of the non-payment of any rates becoming due at any time after March 31, 1930.—Received From Mr C. W. Coleman, Rewa, requesting that a reduction in rent of reserve 46, Block XVI., Ongo S.D., from £l2 to £9 per annum.—Referred to the councillor for the riding concerned for a report. From Mr F. H. Thompson, Rualiine, requesting a reduction in rent of reserve 30, Block XVI., Hautapu S.D., from £3 15s to £2 per annum.—Referred to the councillor for the riding concerned for a report. Mr F. H. Eggcrs, overseer for tho southern ridings, reported as under:—“Cheltenham riding: Tho sections of tho main highways havo been' well maintained by tho power grader; also a section of tho Cheltenham Cross Road. Tho roadman has been engaged cleaning out watertables and cutting back fern and scrub on Barrow’s and Coulter’s Roads. All tho roads are in good orders. Kiwitca riding: The county dump trucks carted out 308 cubio yards of maintenance metal on the No. 52 main highway. This road has been well maintained by tho power grader. Tho roadman has been engaged opening up drains and lowering a culvert on the Upper Bcaconsficld Valley Road. Repair work has been carried out on Coulter’s and Perry’s Roads. Waituna riding: The roadman has attended to tho work of improving bends on Rewa Hill and tho Rangitikei Valley Road on the No. 377 main highway. The drains on tho Rangitikei Valley Road south havo been opened up and a small bridge on tho Mangapipi Road rcdccked. The roadman is now engaged on tho work of improving bends on tho Pakihikura Hill. Minor repair work has been carried out on the Waituna Valley Road. Ongo riding: Tho section of the No. 377 main highway in this riding has been kept in good condition by the power grader. Two old culverts on the main highway havo been renewed with 9in and 12in concrete pipes. Tho work of constructing a stono groyne for the protection of tho ford on Parorangi Road has been completed at a cost of approximately £27. Tho roadman has attended to the usual maintenance work throughout the riding as well as completing fences at the approaches to tho Waituna Bridgo. Kimbolton riding: The county trucks have carted out maintenance metal on tho No. 52 main highway. Both highways havo been trimmed by the power grader; also a section of Mcßeth’s Road. Water-tables havo been cleaned out on tho highways, Middle, Terraco -and John’s Roads. Peep-o’-Day riding: The contractor has completed tho work of delivering maintenance metal on tho Kiwitca-Tapuae Road, tho total quqantity delivered being 724 cubic yards. Tho roadman is engaged in attending to the trimming of this metal and other maintenance work. On tho eastern section of this riding, the roadman has attended to minor repair work when not engaged in tho metal pit.”—Adopted.
