FIVE-ASIDE TOURNEY. phoendTa WIN. The 1932 hockey season, so far as the Manawatu Hockey Association is concerned, opened at the Sportsground yesterday afternoon, when a friendly five-aside tournament was held. No trophies were at stake. Two. sections were arranged and over 30 games were set down for decision, hut Broadway 'I) defaulted and as a result many byes could not he avoided. The weather was sufficiently keen to encourage smart hockey and with good grounds the contestants put in bright play at times, although there were periods of poor exhibitions. In both sections play was very keen and the section winners, Phoenix A and Palmerston North 8., secured their positions but only one point in each case. In the A section Broadway A and ICia Ora A, who gave unexpectedly good displays, tied for second place with Palmerston North A n point behind. In section B Phoenix B had a two-point lead over Combined Services, who bettered Broadway B by one point. The final between Phoenix A and Palmerston North B provided a spectacular display, when Phoenix proved their superiority, by three goals to nil. Phoenix had an opportunity of goaling early in the first spell, but failed, and thereafter Phoenix maintained '.he role of invaders. Turner shot two goals brilliantly in the first half, and half-way through the other increased the score.

Voss, M. Levy, S. Mitchell, A. E. Blackbourn and W. Lundy. .

WOODVILLE v. C. 0.8. The Campbell Street Old Boys (Palmerston North) and Woodville hockey teams played their annual friendly match yesterday at "Woodville, the ground being in excellent condition. After a well-contested game, in which the visiting forwards dominated the greater part of the play, Woodville lost bv three goals to seven. Messrs Mills (Palmerston North) and Foreman (Woodville) controlled the game. The visitors were entertained after the match, Mr Inkpen extending o. welcome to the Palmerston North players and expressing pleasure in renewing friendships. Messrs Milne and Robinson returned thanks on behalf ot C. 0.8. Club. , . v . A return game will be played in Palmerston North at an early date.

LADIES’ MATCH. A practice match between the C. and C. and Bunnythorpe clubs was played on the Sportsground oval, C. and C. winning by four goals to one. Although showing signs of being out ot practice, the contestants played good hockey. There W'ere several new players and these shaped well. Mr W. Lundy was the referee.
