MILSON.

(From Our Own Correspondent.)

MILSON, April 20.

That the settlers in this district are keenly alive to the value of education to their children was well exemplified by the large attendance of householders at tho meeting held on Monday last. Tho eleven nominations roeived for the fivo seats on the committee also demonstrated that the parents are willing to give their voluntary services towards this end. At every annual meeting in this district, with one_ exception, more than sufficient nominations have been received to fill vacancies. Although the total of names submitted this year is very gratifying it by no means constitutes a record. At tho first election 16 candidates contested the five scats, Messrs Benton, Carter, Creed, Dalgleish, Franklyn, Fairbum, Gilbert, Henry, Laloy Murphy, Malcolm, Nielson, Richardson, Reaa, Thompson, and Walker going to the vote. It is interesting to note that Messrs Murphy and Franklyn have again been elected for the current year. The credit balance last year was £3O 13s 9d whilst this year it is £l3 10s Id. If the subsidy on the voluntary subscriptions made in 1929, and which have not yet been paid by the Government, is received this year, this balance will bo increased to approximately £33. Tho raising of the school age from five to six years would seriously affect the Milson School, and would probably mean that it would be reduced a grade, with the loss of one teacher. The householders, in a motion, expressed their disapproval of the proposed action. With reduced capitation and the withholding of subsidies on voluntary subscriptions during the coming year, the task of the new committee to’ maintain tho high standard that has previously obtained will bo no mean one, but the strongest possible combination has been elected, and with due economy and judicious management another successful year will result. The Milson Hall was the scene of gay revels last evening when tho Kelvin Grove Old Girls’ Basketball Club held a social and dance. Over 100 were present and a most enjoyable timo was spent. Mr J. J. Waller, as M.C., kept tho fun going until the early hours and allowed no hitch to occur to mar the evening’s pleasure. Tho hall presented a gay appearance with ito decorations of coloujed paper. A programme of old-time and modern dancing was indulged in, interspersed with musical items and fancy dances. Little Jean Curtis was particularly pleasing in a tap dance, her effort meeting with applause. Mr Sheppard earned a reward with a bracket of humorous numbers. Miss Gwenth Macnaughtan gave two graceful fancy dances. Variety was added to the programme by the introduction of several novelty dances. A dainty and ample supper was served during the evening by tho ladies’ cominitttee. Orchestral musio was provided for the dances, extras being played by Mr Preston with an accordion and Mr Loveday’s group on stringed instruments.
