RACING NEWS

FROM STABLE AND COURSE. (By “Binodular.”) Alladin will not now undertake the trip to Australia, tho knock ho gave himself at Oamaru not having yielded to treatment. Tho latest of the progony of Tressida, tho dam of Runnymede and Simba, is a colt by Chief Ruler, of whom good things aro reported. Imperial Fame, tho eight-year-old gelding who broko his maiden status only this year, registered his 10th success when ho won at Masterton. Tho Awapuni mentor, ; W. Stone, took Alpinist and Thornproof south for tho Nelson meeting and will probably go on to tho Marlborough fixture before ho returns. Local stables supply a strong list of nominations at Martori, particularly in the jumping department. In tho Marton Steeplechase eight of tho 15 horses figuring aro trained at Awapuni. R. E. Hatch has his new arrival, Interlocutor, engaged at Marion, while tho Nigger Minstrel colt’s stable companion, Equitant, also figures. Both wero originally trained on tho course. - THE CHAMPIONSHIPS. Tho positions at the head of the trainers’ championship table did not undergo any alteration at the Masterton meeting where none of the three leaders was represented. Tho Blonheim mentor, T. R. George, hod members of his team claiming engagements at Masterton,_ but they did not mako tho trip, remaining at home for their local meeting. In tho company to be encountered at Nelson it is not improbable that George will improve his load over E. J. Ellis, who will no doubt have representation at the South Canterbury fixture, which is also set down for to-mor-row. Tho local lady mentor, Mrs A. W. McDonald, who ranks third on the tablo,

one point behind E. J. Ellis, is set a more formidable task where tho local meeting is concerned, for her representatives will bo encountering the best of tho Dominion’s horses to-day and to-morrow. However, with tho jumping season approaching, it is not improbable that she will bo found, strongly represented in that branch of tho spore and add still further to her credit account. Tho battlo for leadership among tho horsemen is developing in interest, although a further- two successes in the saddle at Masterton enablod tho local horseman, K. Yoitre, to further extend his advantage over 11. N. Wiggins. At the time of writing Voitro lias placed 65 wins to his credit and is now four points in advance of H. Gray, with 11. N. Wiggins I next in attendance. with 57. Unfortunately, the disqualification imposed upon Gray places last year’s champion out of the running. B. H. Morris rodo two winners at Masterton to bring his total up to 46, but there is thon a sharp drop to E. A. ICeosing (35) and tho Ellis Bros, and L. G. Morris, who attend ono another at one point intervals, A. E. Ellis having 34. L. J. Ellis 33 and L. G. Morris 32. The last named horseman now deposes R. Reed, whose position bus boon stationary for somo time as the result of him being absent in Australia, while tho southern horseman, G. Humphries, is now oil equal terms with 31 points. Then comes the local horseman. S. Anderson, with 29 successes to his credit. Tho importance of the autumn fixture of the Manawatu Club is evidenced by tho fact that, of tho 11 loading horsemen, only ono of tho active brigade was absent from Awapuni to-day. HIS LAST RACE. t PIIAR LAP IN AMERICA. AGUA CALIENTE HANDICAP. That great product of Now Zealand horso racing, Phar Lap, who made turf history in tho Antipodes, captured tho public fancy hero in a remarkable manner (says tho San Francisco correspondent of the Auck- . land Star under date March 29). In tho preliminaries leading up to tho Agua Calientc Handicap, a raco worth 50,050 dollars, Phar Lap had galloped an easy six furlongs in 1.20, with Elliott aboard. This jockey, who is somewhat heavy, compared with American jockeys, weighed 9st 31li, and after the gallop lie stated that his mount was in first-class condition. In all his work Phar Lap has alyays impressed and ho was installed favourito for tho event. Spanish Play, winner of tho Now Orleans handicap, and Cabezo wero next fancied. There, wore 25 entries, but several withdrew for various reasons, somo believing they had no chance against Phar Lap. In tho 12-year history of tho West’s greatest race, there has been nothing to equal tho popularity of tho giant Now Zealand thoroughbred, for tho “Red Terror” —as Phar Lap was generally nlluded to by both newspapers and racegoers—brought with him a fine record from “Down Under,” including sevoral mile and a quarter races in time, which, if repeated in Mexico, would win the Agua Calientc stakes. THE RACE. ' When the Sunday arrived Caliente was overrun with thousands of race patrons and Hollywood cinema stars wero there in profusion, led by the over-popular George Arliss, of England. Greta Garbo and Clairo Windsor were there, with scores of other screen luminaries. When tho .eleven horses paraded to the barrier Spanish Play broko rapidly and an unusuual circumstance marked tho parade by Phar Lap galloping a quarter of a mile at unusually high speed, evidently in the form of a wanner. Ho arrived at the post -and was w r ell behaved, standing quietly,. in direct contrast to Rcveillo Boy, who was extremely fractious, as is usual with this horse. Roveillo Boy plunged considerably and was at last moved' from his line to tho outside position and tho raco at last started after a severely trying time of seven minutes delay, which , militated greatly against Phar Lap, who was weighted at 9.3, compared with tho 7.0 of the Californian entry Bahamas. Dr Freeland got a good start, but Phar Lap broko very slowly and was tenth leaving tho barrier. Moving ponderously with his load, Phar Lap gradually asserted himself and at the quarter-inilo he had moved to fifth position. With remarkable strides tho Now- Zealander proved a worthy contender and headed tho field, leading by two lengths at tho halfmile, with Spanish Play second and Cabezo running third. Tho fractious Reveille Boy bad cooled down considerably by this and was making great pace, so much so that ho was within a length of Phar Lap, who was running easily at tho three-quarter-mile post. Joe Flores was second and Reveille Boy had been rolegated to third place and Spanish Play fourth. At tho mile Phar Lap was leading comfortably by a couple of . lengths and was given out as a positivo winner, all competitors being unable to overcome his lead. The New Zealander increased his lead to threo lengths and it was impossible for all America’s finest horses to win tho raco, for Elliott was apparently holding Phar Lap back in order not to make tho raco a runaway. Yet this is what actually occurred and Phar' Lap passed the winning pest some two and a half lengths in front, with Reveille Boy second. Scimitar, a rank outsider, was third, half a length away, and Joo Flores was a poor fourth. * BREAKS RECORD. Despite being held back Phar Lap established a new track record, clipping a full second from tho best previous time. The New Zealand horso ran past the post in 2.2 4-5 for tho Milo and a quarter. It was a" popular victory, for just before starting

I there had been trcmondous betting' on I’har Lap to the almost total exclusion of all other starters, so positivo were the patrons that Phar Lap was to bo tbo victor of the great race. When Phar Lap was promenaded after tho race he had not a bead of perspiration under tho saddle and ho was not breathing heavily. Ho appeared to bo as cool as a cucumber and had not been extended. This is tho fact that caused the greatest wonderment at tho track, proving conclusively that tho Now Zealander might have won by at least 20 lengths l had he boon extended. PHAR LAP’S SKELETON. MR TELFORD’S STATEMENT.' When interviewed at Melbourne, Mr H. R. Telford, part-owner of Phar Lap, stated that ho know nothing about tho reported offer of tha skeleton of Phar Lap to tho New Zealand Government. TROTTING. TE AROHA ACCEPTANCES.
