TIRITEA STREAM.
PROPOSAL FOR DIVERSION
DISCUSSION HELD OVER.
Tho reserves committee of the Palmerston North City Council _ recommended to tho council last evening that tho council transfer to tire Massey College authorities approximately one acre of land situated at the rear of tho Mcllardy Reserve in exchange for approximately half an acre of college land through which it is proposed to divert the Tiritea Stream, the situation of both areas and the altered course of the stream being shown on a plan submitted bv the City Engineer. It had been decided by tho committee to approve of the plan and to agree to the proposed diversion, the work to be undertaken under No. 5 scheme. “From where did this proposal emanate ?” inquired Cr. Hodgens. “We have had no communication from the Massey College, and our first introduction to it was a plan submitted by the engineer. I feel strongly about the proposal to divert tho stream,” added Cr. Hodgens. “One of its beauties is tho way it wanders towards the bluff and then back again. Tho ratepayers have done very well by the Massey College. W r e should give consideration to exactly what this proposal means.” Cr. Fitzherbert said that the reserves committee had received a written application from the Massey College Council on the matter and liajl considered it in arriving at its decision. “I am very much in favour of the request being granted,” he added, “as I feel that the Massey College is an important institution in tho welfare of.our city. W’e should give them every help.” Further discussion was held over, on the motion of Cr. Tremaine, until tho next meeting of the works committee.
