RACING NEWS

FROM STABLE AND COURSE. (By “Binocular.”) A Sydney report states that Nightmurch will return to Sydney for tho spring racing. Hard Words is reported from Takanini to bo shaping pleasingly on the tracks and gives an indication that ho will stand up to racing. Star Area is reported to bo training on all right at Wanganui, and if ho keeps Bound tho big Acre gelding will probably do well as a hurdlor. Tho winnings of tho promising RicciLr-ton-trainod two-year-old, Silver Ring, have now been corrected to total £1239, not £999 as previously announced. Croupier’s yearling brother hue boon broken in and is stated to be nicely mannered. As yet ho is still on the small side, but there is' plenty of time for him to develop. A nice looking half-brother to Monaghan, by Raupapa out of Kathleen Mavourneen, is in work at Stratford. He is stated to bo a well-made black who gives tho impression that he may turn out useful later on.

A Manfred colt which is being got ready for next season at Wanganui is reported to be a fine-looking youngster and gives promise of being speody. He will naco in the same interests as Sea Scout.

Owing to knee trouble littlo in tho nature of fast work has been exacted from Bugle Call of late, and it is possiblo that his connections aro awaiting easier track conditions before sharpening him up for future racing. Princo of Orange is reported from the north to be looking bright and healthy, and to bo in fine condition to be prepared for winter racing. It is now two seasons since this follow won, and it will be interesting to noto his progress when again carrying silk. Constant Sun has been nominated for tho Gold Cup at Masterton (states the New Plymouth News) and from the manner in which this three-year-old has been improving of late he must be accordod a good chance, bio won the Oroua Hack Cup at Podding in the same easy manner in which he settled his field at Opunako. Three track records aro reported to have been made at the Riverton meeting. In the first place, Black Duke won the Easter Handicap in 2.7 3-5, Charmaine won the Fiord Handicap in 1.30 4-5 and Crubenmoro the Farewell Handicap in 1.26 4-5. Tho two last times are also claimed to be race records for Southland. Tho roomy Riverton track was in fine order and there were good times throughout the carnival. PIIAR LAP. A GREAT PERFORMER. Phnr Lap is dead. Such was the message- which rang out throughout tho world yesterday, which sounded “Finis” to the career of a great performer who, I had he lived, appeared destined to attain tho top of tho list of stake earners in tho world. Winner of £66,450 in stake money, Phar Lap’s best season was as a three-year-old when he won over varying distances from one mile to two and a quarter miles. Peculiarly enough, his one success ovor a sprint distance was when he emerged from tho ranks of the maiden performers at his fifth attempt as a two-vear-old. However, his frame would have indicated thnt ho would require time to develop, and although ho opened his three-year-old career by unsuccessfully contesting ono six-furlong and two seven-furlong events, he later proved himself by winning over nino furlongs in the Rosehill Guineas. Then in rapid succession followed the A.J.C. Derby, Craven Plato and the V.R.C. Derby prior to his essaying tho Melbourne Cup. However, in this big two mile race, which is a very severe test for a three-year-old, Phar Lap finished in third place, the New Zealand-owned nnd bred Nightmarch, with R. Reed in tho saddle, proving to be the winner. That the heavy question asked of him did not seriously affect Phar Lap’s constitution was made apparent by the fact that ho went on to win tho St. I.cger Stakes (ono nnd threequnrter miles) and tho Governor's Plate (ono mile and a half) prior to capturing tho King’s Plate (two miles). lie then added the Chipping Norton Stakes, St. Leger Stakes, Cumberland Stnkes. A.J.C. Plate and the Elder Stnkes before closing his activities for the season with another victory—in the King’s Cup.

Whereas ho' had been started 20 times for his 13 firsts as a three-year-old, Phar Lap had but 16 starts in tho next Benson when, peculiarly enough he ran second in the Warwick Stakes at his first start and wound up his activities with

a second in tho Lloyd Stakes. Thus his 14 starts between those two seconds were productive of victories over all distances, but his greatest effort was probably his Melbourne Cup victory with 9.12 on his back. Twelve months later he was installed favourite for tho Melbourne Cup, despite tho fact that he was required to carry 10.10 in a gruelling contest. However, tho task proved beyond him nnd the weight-oarrying record for tho race remained in the keeping of yet another New Zealand-bred horse, the mighty Carbine, who curried 10.5 to victory away back in 1890. That outing marked tho completion of Phar Lap’s racing in Australia, for then followed his trip across the seas in search of fresh records in America—a trip which, while it brought with it a glorious success, was to prove so ill-fated. By his death so was frustrated any aims his owners may have had at beating Sun Beau’s stake winning record of £73,349, but Phar Lap’s name will now go down to posterity as Australia’s greatest stake winner, although ho only ranks fourth in the world’s list. APPEAL DISMISSED. NGINGONGINGO CASE. Per Press Association. CHRISTCHURCH. April 6. In the Ngingongingo case Mr Justice Adams dismissed tho appeal of the owner, R. N. P. Morten, against the decision of tho Trotting Conference. Tho appeal judges disqualified tho horse for ono year, and tho judge held that substantial justice had been done. “Dealing only with the merits of the case,’’ said Mr Justice Adams, "I find that, throughout tho inquiries there were obvious indications of a desire on behalf of tho arbitral tribunals to give the plaintiff every fair and reasonable opportunity, lie nnd all persons who could support his case were heard before ono or other of those tribunals, and tho whole of the evidence was taken down in writing and considered by both appellate tribunals. “As far as appears, everything that could havo been urged on behalf of the plaintiff was placed before these tribunals. In his affidavit tho most tho plaintiff had found himself able to say i 6 that had he been present at the inquiry before the conference judges ho might havo been able to say something to assist them. The plaintiff complains of an omission to give him notice of the time and place of hearing of tho appeal to the conference. That, however, 1b no more than a technical objection, and in tho circumstances of this case cannot bo upheld.”
