ZOO IN TROUBLE.
LACK OF FINANCE. The West Australian Zoo was founded in the earliest days by Sir John Forrest and actively supported by the late Sir Winthrop' Haekett. Many endowments were promised, but did not eventuate, and finally Sir Winthrop Haekett was found to have concentrated his testimentary gratuities on the university. The Zoo executive has now an overdraft of £7OOO, and under the stem dictate of the Treasurer that all State activities have to pay their own way, tho proispect for meeting the bill for elephant and lion menus, to say nothing of the fish dinners for the polar bear, tho nuts for the monkeys and the varied fare for a list extending from giraffes to humming birds, is not bright. For a long while expenses were made good by the hire from tennis courts, but competition of courts laid down on almost every empty section throughout the metropolitan area has curtailed this rovenue, and now a scheme of reconstruction, and possibly closure, has to be decided on.
