PAHIATUA

PAHIATUA, March 9. Four sisters mot in Pahiatua the other day for the first time for a good period. They comprised Mesdames G. Wilson (Hunterville), F. W. Groves (Makomako), J. Hannah (Foxton) and F. G. Moore (Pahiatua). All expectations were far exceeded when the Pahiatua Horticultural and Industrial Show was held yesterday. The display in the Drill Hall was magnificent. The rose bowl for tho most points in the cooking and preserves section was won very easily by Miss M. Taylor, of Koliinui, Miss Whittaker, being second. Mr H. A. Styles carried off the rose bowl for the most points in the vegetable classes, the runner-up being Mr J. Evans, of Rongomai. Competition in the cut flowers section was unusually keen but Mr 11. T. Simmons, of Mangamutu, finally triumphed for tho points prize, winning the rose bowl with a total of 61i points as against 50£ by Mr F. W. Graham, of Dannevirko. Mr Graham, however, earned the distinction of showing the champion dahlia, and Mr H. A. Bick exhibited the champion bloom, any variety not in tho schedule. Several classes attracted remarkably large entries but the most popular of all was again the boiled potato competition for Mr S. Bolton’s special prizes. The donor this time had to judge, as many as 3 entries, and the prize went to Miss J. Lovell, of Woodville.

The question of providing a now water supply for the town was discussed at a meeting of the borough council last night, when it was decided that the mayor and a councillor should make full inquiries in Wellington as to the possibility of obtaining monetary assistance from the Unemployment Board. Councillor J. C. Davidson said that by proceeding with the work now great assistance would be given tho unemployed in the district, and he also believed that there was a very great possibility of obtaining assistance from the Unemployment Board by way of subsidy. The total cost of a new water scheme was £20,600, made up of £10,600 for the pumping plant to £IO,OOO for reticulation. Of the total cost of £10,600, £4OOO would be spent on Labour and of the balance £5500 would be for material made in New Zealand, and the remaining £I3OO would be for imported material. That meant that out of £10,600 over £9OOO would be spent in New Zealand, and much of it locally. It seemed to him that the council would hava a very good case to put before the Unemployment Board in asking for a subsidy. The construction of the several big groynes near tho town traffic bridge has created a deal of interest. Tho groynes are of a design different to that employed when other protective works have been carried out in the same locality in the past, andw it is believed that they will prove very effective. , Mr and Mrs W. Bridgo, of Hastings, are at present the guests of Mr and Mrs 11. E. Herbert, Eketahuna. Mr G. T. Allen, editor of the Eketahuna Express, was taken ill suddenly, on Thursday afternoon and was immediately sent to the Pahiatua Hospital where he underwent a very serious operation. His condition is fairly good. Mr F. Cowlam, county clerk, has been very ill for the past fortnight and his friends will now bo pleased to hear that ho is progressing favourably. Mrs G. W. Toyn and Mre G. Watson, of Eketahuna, judged the fancy work at the Pahiatua horticultural and industrial show.
