UNEMPLOYMENT COMMITTEE.
WEEKLY MEETING. The Palmerston North Unemployment Committee met to-day, Mr J. A. Nash, M. P., presiding. Others present were Messrs Mansford, Batchelar, Collis, Hodgens, Graham, Dixon and J. Lowden (secretary). It was decided that county councils be informed that, where relief work had been undertaken for farmers and was not of direct benefit to the county, the council should ask the farmers concerned to keep the men employed during the fourth week. “The number of men who are making an honest attempt with gardening is good,” reported the secretary, “and they are doing their utmost, but there are others who can, but will not, while some who are willing to cultivate gardens are' prevented by circumstances over which they have no control.” 1
It was decided that Messrs Graham and Dixon should go through the list of those with land suitable for gardening, and submit a statement, with their recommendations, to the next meeting. Six applications for labour under the 4a scheme were dealt with and approved.
