LEADER’S ACTIVITIES. FURTHER LEGAL ACTION PROBABLE. CHIEF SECRETARY’S STATEMENT. (United Press Association.—By Electric Telegraph.—Copyright.) Received February 20, 9.65 a.m. SYDNEY, Feb. 20. The Telegraph says that further legal action against Colonel Eric Campbell, the leader of the New Guard, is believed to be contemplated by the Government. The Chief Secretary, Mr M. Gosling, said that he had received a report from the acting metropolitan,.Superintendent of Police,- Mr Irving. concerning Colonel Campbell’s speecn on February 18, in which Colonel Campbell said that ‘‘one policeman who took a prominent part .in the ‘insulting words case’ has been promoted, and one detective who made the mistake of saying that he thought I was an honourable man has been demoted.” Mr Irving says that these statements are not correct. No police officer concerned in the case has been either rnoted or lost rank.
